The state police have launched an ‘operation clean up’ to act against policemen who have links with criminal gangs.

The superintendents of police of all the 75 districts have been directed to prepare a list of tainted policemen who are hand in glove with criminal elements.

Besides initiating departmental action against tainted cops, the police department has decided to transfer them to other districts to break their nexus with criminals.

IG, Agra zone, Sujit Pandey transferred 53 tainted policemen on Monday. “The list of tainted policemen includes inspectors, sub-inspectors and constables. It has been forwarded to the DGP office for further action.

Earlier, the SP of Gautam Buddh Nagar had transferred over two dozen tainted policemen. Talking to HT, DGP Javeed Ahmed said: “The eight zonal IGPs have been directed to send the list of tainted policemen to police headquarters for action.”

“Along with transfers, the state police will also initiate action against corrupt officials. The aim is to break the nexus between criminals and policemen,” he said.

The state police have also decided to appoint three inspector rank officers at big and sensitive police stations.

While one officer will handle law and order, the other two will maintain and clear files and dispose of the problems of the people visiting the police station.
