LUCKNOW: Acid attack survivor Kavita on Monday got married to the man who stood by her during the tough days after the gruesome incident and promised to keep her happy for the rest of her life.

“Life was tough but I kept on moving and I am happy I am getting married to the man I like,” said the 25-year-old, who married Nitesh at Shri Hanuman Mandir Japtibag near Tikait Rai Taalaab.

Witness to the ceremony were a few friends and the medical team that conducted three major surgeries on Kavita to restore her looks and confidence. Dr Vivek Agrawal, a plastic surgeon, held a small party after the ‘Jaimaal’ and ‘Phere’ solemnized the marriage.

“I conducted three major surgeries free of cost for Kavita. But even after surgery I felt like doing more and I got her trained. Today she has a counter in my clinic where items such as artificial jewellery made by her are sold to visitors,” said Dr Agrawal.

Burn injuries and hair loss had shattered Kavita in 2012 June when a jealous lover threw acid on her as he got to know she was getting married to someone else. Kavita fought the case despite opposition by her family. She was asked to leave home and had to find shelter with her younger brother.

“Her life since 2012 has been full of struggle. But she stood by her decision and today she is selfsufficient,” said Shiva Mishra, the Young Women Committee convenor at AIDWA. Shiva has also stood by Kavita, helping after the attack. “I wish she keeps on making progress in life,” said Shiva, who has been helping women in distress.

Draped in a red lehnga, Kavita came for marriage in complete make-up as brides in India do. “She has a high definition water proof make up today to give that picture perfect look for the camera,” said Anita Suri, the beautician who did the make-up and also trained Kavita in the art.

She was also there to bless the new couple. Kavita is a graduate from the Lucknow University and is trained in making paper jewellery. The items made by her are sold at Dr Agrawal’s Diva clinic.

“The greatest thing for me is that despite effort by my family that I stop pursuing the case as it would defame me, life has brought happiness and I wish all girls and women stand up against offenders,” said Kavita, as she begins her new life with Nitesh, 27, employed with a private firm.
