BAREILLY: Nida Khan, daughter-inlaw of Ala Hazrat family, has said the stand of chief minister Yogi Adityanath on triple talaq gives hope for justice to Muslim women.

Nida, herself a triple talaq victim, has accused her in-laws of harassment for dowry. She was married to Sheeran Raza – the elder son of Usman Raza who is a cleric and a descendant of Ala Hazrat – in February 2015 and was given divorce after a few months. “I will request chief minister Yogi Adityanath to hear my plea,” Nida said. Ala Hazrat alias Ahmed Raza Khan Barelvi was a 20th century Muslim cleric. Ala Hazrat dargah in Bareilly, managed by his descendants, is one of the most revered sites for Barelvi sect of Sunni Islam.

“My husband and in-laws continue to harass me and my family. The local administration and police have failed to protect us. Neither me nor my family was consulted or informed about the divorce. It was a diktat,” Nida said. Nida’s father in-law cleric Usman Raza Khan said, “She (Nida) is a modern girl and is free to approach anybody with her complaint. It will not change the Islamic law.” An FIR was lodged under Sections 313 (causing miscarriage without woman’s consent), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) 452 (house trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Baradari police station. Though the police have filed a final report giving a clean chit to her in-laws, Nida has opposed it in the court. “The investigating officer was influenced by my in-laws,” she alleged.
