GORAKHPUR: Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Amik Jamai, who is former JNU students’ union president Kanhaiya Kumar’s friend, on Monday said singer Sonu Nigam’s Twitter post against azaan showed his prejudice against Islam.

The “Kal ho naa ho” singer had posted: “God bless everyone. I’m not a Muslim and I have to be woken up by the azaan in the morning. When will this forced religiousness end in India?”

“I think he should be tolerant toward Islam,” Jamai said to a question about his stand on Nigam’s tweet.

Jamai was in the news last year BJP legislator OP Sharma thrashed him allegedly for shouting a pro- Pakstani slogan during Kanhaiya Kumar ‘s hearing at the Patiala house court in Delhi .

Amik Jamai was in Gorakhpur to attend a programme organised by the Ambedkarwadi Chhatra Sabha, a local dalit student outfit, at Gorakhpur University . He accused the BJP of having a dual character on dalit icon Babasaheb BR Ambedkar. He claimed that on the one hand, the party pretended to follow the ideals of Ambedkar and, on the other hand, it was trying to do away with reservation for scheduled castes and scheduled tribes.

“The BJP talks about social harmony but there is a difference between its words and deeds,” he added. He also accused the BJP of provoking dalits against Muslims by raking up issues like love jehad.
