BAREILLY: Amid the ongoing debate over the issue of triple talaq, senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan asserted that Muslim men would continue to follow Shariat law in case of personal matters.

The statement came on Sunday, hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s comment on the issue. He called for “justice to Muslim sisters,” while addressing BJP national executive meet in Bhubaneshwar.

Reacting to the statement, Azam said, “Muslim men will continue to follow Shariat law laid down by Quran in their personal matters even if a law is formed against it. Muslim men of this country will only follow Shariat law, nothing else.”

The reaction falls in line in support of triple talaq which is one of the ways used by Muslim men to give divorce to their wife by simply uttering talaq thrice. A hearing is also scheduled on the issue of Supreme Court next month.

When contacted by HT , Khan reiterated his stand saying, “The Constitution has given right to every Muslim of this country to follow his religion. Constitution of the country is above every political party and Muslims will live by it. Certain parties are deliberately trying to interfere in this intricate matter but they will never succeed.”

The former minister also expressed confidence in the ruling party for safeguarding the rights of Muslims.

“BJP was elected in the state on their promise of sabka sath sabka vikas and the party must respect the mandate of public by keeping their promise,” Azam Khan said.
