KANPUR: Income Tax officials carried out raid at the house of joint commissioner (trade tax) and road transport officer (RTO) in a high-end apartment here on Tuesday and recovered ₹1 crore cash.

The team raided the house of RTO Sunita Verma and her husband Manoj Verma at Leela Palace in posh Tilak Nagar and also recovered documents regarding purchase of huge property in Jahanabad. The action follows an early morning raid at the office of a leading transport company-Shatabdi Travels-- which threw up documents regarding partnership between the officials and the travel company.

Officials said Sunita was under scanner for allegedly extorting money from transporters and showing favouritism.

The team also seized a computer and personal diary of Sunita that contained telephone numbers and other information about big transporters and bus service owners.

A senior I-T officer pleading anonymity said the investigations were on to unearth financial irregularities by the duo. The couple was posted in the city for the past four years. Sunita had joined here as ARTO and was recently promoted as road transport officer.
