Uttar Pradesh has the potential to meet the target of producing roof-top solar energy up to 4,300 megawatt, if a clear guideline on the same is brought into practice.

As per the national solar mission, the state needs to generate 13,000 megawatt of energy and in that the share of rooftop solar power is 4,300 mega watt, said Abhishek Kumar Chanchal, media officer at CEED (Centre for Environment and Energy Development) on Tuesday during a press conference.

“This is possible if the state that already has a policy on renewable energy gets a guideline for solar rooftop energy generation,” he said, adding, “The solar energy that was once considered to be very costly is now coming for less and is convenient.”

Abhishek Pratap, director programmes at CEED, said all government office buildings in Bihar would soon become potential rooftop solar power generation places as the government is going to pass a rule for this.

In UP also, apart from government buildings, malls and commercial complexes can be a part of solar power mission, he said.

“Apart from this the solar grid, pumps, floating solar power systems, canal systems and micro grid can play gamechangers in state,” said Pratap.

They said the country has set a target for generation of 1.75 lakh mega watt of renewable energy where the share of wind energy is 60,000 megawatt, bio-mass energy 5,000 megawatt.

“UP is facing a peak power deficit of 15 %. The vision should be such that by 2022 the state generates 13,000 megawatt of solar power,” he said. If longterm planning is not implemented, they said, the deficit might go up and even in normal time there might be a deficit.
