ALLAHABAD: With an aim to increase green cover, environment organisation Global Green has come up with a proposal wherein every household will plant a sapling on World Population Day on July 11. The saplings would be arranged from Forest department.

As per 2011 census a total of around 2.25 lakh household exist within city limits.

Talking to Hindustan Times, president of Global Green Manoj Srivastava, said the proposal would help in associating people with the cause of environment conservation.

“Every year plantation drives are carried out by district administration along with forest department but lack of public involvement fails to drive in the point of environment conservation. This initiative will involve residents in large numbers.

We are also planning to provide a metal or plastic based name tag on which the family could mention its name and put it around the sapling.

This will make them feel a sense of attachment for the sapling and hence make them care for it,” he said.

As per Manoj, population pressure was casting its effect on environment and it was time that people come out in large numbers to save it.

Around 2.25 lakh saplings would be planted every year in existing 80 wards of Nagar Nigam which surely would help in increasing green cover year after year, he added.

In August 2016, as part of the mega initiative to plant 5 crore saplings in a single day in Uttar Pradesh for entering Guinness Book of World Records, a significant of 6.50 lakh saplings were planted in district’s 20 development blocks besides city area.
