KANPUR: The atmospheric temperature in Uttar Pradesh has risen by 1 degree Celsius in last 35 years. Worse still, it continues to rise at an alarming rate, claims a study by a teacher from the Indian Institute of technology, Kanpur (IIT-K).

While this explains the reason behind April being hotter than before, the study predicts a warmer February by 2040.

“People would start facing heat wave (loo) from February instead of May and June,” said Vimal Misra, who is currently posted at the civil engineering department of IIT-Gandhinagar.

Misra conducted a comparative study of temperature of February, March and April from 1980 to 2015.

The study was conducted in nine UP districts, Kanpur, Lucknow, Ghaziabad, Agra, Meerut, Allahabad, Aligarh, Moradabad, Bareli and Varanasi.

It was found that temperature continued to rise in all these districts during February, March and April.

On the basis of rise in temperature by one degree Celsius during past 35 years, the researcher has concluded that it could rise by 2 to 3 degree Celsius by 2040 and would cause unbearable heat.

Besides, the number of summer days would also rise as the heat of the sun would be felt from February onward as against May.

“The main cause behind the rise in temperature is massive deforestation, substantial increase in number of vehicles and urbanization, apart from climatic changes,” he said.

However, the change in climate is a world over phenomenon, Misra claimed.
