KOTA: Regular classes coupled with confidence helped Rajasthan’s Kalpit Veerwal score full marks and clinch the All India Rank 1 in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2017. The results were announced on Thursday. Veerwal told HT over the phone that the chairperson of the CBSE, RK Chaturvedi, called him in the morning to give him the news. He is the topper in general as well the SC category. He has scored 360 out of 360 in the examination.

Lucknow boy Rohan Gupta of City Montessori School (Gomti Nagar branch) scored 328 marks out of 360 and secured allIndia rank (AIR) 43 in JEE Mains 2017, the result of which was declared on Thursday.

“We are happy that our son has done better than what we did in our times. But this is just the first step. We are confident that Rohan will do well in the JEE Advanced too,” said his proud parents.

His father Rohit Gupta, a software engineer, had cracked JEE in 1988 with 196th rank and mother Anamika (a gynecologist) cleared the AIPMT in 1991 with 123rd rank.

Like his father, Rohan wants to pursue computer science. “The subject is interesting and ever developing. There is a lot of creativity in it. Toying with computers has been my childhood hobby,” said Rohan who joined FIIT-JEE in Class 11.

“This year, the paper was easy but lengthy, particularly the Mathematics exam. And the best part is that Class 12 marks will not be counted. So I stay focused for the competition, particularly JEE Advanced which will be held in May 21,” said Rohan.

The boy did Class 10 from La Martiniere College and then went to CMS (Gomti Nagar branch) for Class 11. Rohan cleared NTSE in Class 10 and is getting annual scholarship of Rs 15,000 every year.

“My son was serious about studies, so we had to switch off our TV set for two years,” said his father Rohit, who was part of the team that developed software for 1090 helpline. “I am happy that I also went to IIT and now my son will also study in one of the IITs, provided he scores good marks in the next level of examination,” said the proud father.

Rohan’s mother Anamika, who works in community health centre in Bakshi Ka Talab (BKT), said: “My son has also cleared Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY), an on-going National Programme of Fellowship in Basic Sciences initiated and funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, to attract highly motivated students for pursuing basic science courses and research career in science.”

“We are absolutely thrilled to hear about Rohan’s outstanding achievement. He has made us and his parents proud. He is an extremely hard working and sincere child -- very focused. With his 43rd national ranking, he will make it to the college and course of his choice. I wish him the very best for all his future endeavours,” said Rohan’s school principal Abha Anant.

Sharing his strategy for JEE Advanced, Rohan said the mantra is to stay calm and do thorough revision of what all was taught in the last two years.

Over 520 students of FIIT-JEE Lucknow Centre have qualified for JEE Advanced, 2017. These students are now eligible to appear for the JEE Advanced on May 21, 2017. The Joint Entrance Examination (Main) was conducted in offline mode on April 2, 2017 and in online mode on April 8&9.

Students who have made it past the first round are understandably thrilled, yet cautious, as they know the final hurdle remains to be cleared.

“Students who do well in school often fail to do well in competitive examinations because they lack conceptual understanding despite having a good IQ. The success of our students at JEE each year bears testimony to the fact that our way of teaching has succeeded in bringing the best in students. We are very proud of the achievements of our students and teachers,” says NK Dubey, centre head, FIIT-JEE.
