Shahjahanpur-bound woman passenger was allegedly harassed by a railway employee on board the Delhi-Faizabad Express (14206) during the wee hours of Thursday.

She was rescued by co-passengers and the accused was arrested. Railway police registered a complaint and initiated investigation.

The incident occurred in an AC coach (B1) around 12:30 pm when the train was approaching the Bareilly railway station.

As per the complaint lodged by the passenger, she boarded the train from Delhi with a waiting ticket.

After the ticket examiner asked her to shift to coach B1, she moved to the said coach and sat on a vacant seat when Chandra, who was on a nearby seat, allegedly started misbehaving with her.

“He touched my hand and pulled me towards himself when I asked him to stop,” the complaint of the passenger reads.

Other passengers came to her rescue and informed the train staff about it.

“The passenger’s complaint was registered and the accused, Suresh Chandra was de-boarded at Bareilly for further investigation,” said inspector Sunil Dutt, in-charge of Government Railway Police, Bareilly.

“The accused has informed that he is a railway employee and currently posted with Railway Board in Delhi,” the officer added.

“The incident took place around 12:30 pm. The security staff on board alerted us in advance and a team was sent to the coach to detain the accused when the train reached Bareilly,” said the inspector. The GRP managed to complete the complaint procedure in time.

Chandra was sent for a medical examination and detained overnight at the GRP post.

The accused was challaned and presented in court on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Chandra refuted the woman’s claim.

He told investigators that he was sleeping on his berth (B1, 28) when the woman started shouting for no reason.
