Patients’ death during strike: Case filed against 600 JNMC doctors

-

Vice president of Nyay Sangathan Ifrahim Hussain has filed a petition in the court of the chief judicial magistrate here against 600 doctors of JN Medical College, alleging that at least five patients died during their sixday strike from April 23. The court has admitted the petition and has sought a detailed report from Civil Lines police station.

To recall, on April 23, some students had taken an injured colleague to the medical college. There was an altercation between the students and doctors over alleged delay in treatment. The argument soon turned into fisticuffs and after that, the doctors went on strike.

In his petition, Ifrahim has said that members of the Doctors Association locked the emergency ward and so five patients expired due to no treatment . Many patients were forced to return and may have died mid way. The petitioner has also demanded inquiry into the deaths which took place due to strikes in the past 10 years.

The report of the committee probing the confrontation between the students and resident doctors, which has been handed over to the Civil Lines police station, has indicted the students and now police are preparing to register a case against them. The cops have made accused 15 people, including AMUSU vice president Nadim Ansari. Dr Saad, who was on duty at the time of the confrontation and who was allegedly assaulted by the students, has also lodged an FIR against 15 accused, including AMUSU office-bearers. Civil Lines police station has received seven other complaints too.
