23-year-old woman has accused her husband and in-laws, the famous Ala Hazrat family, and 20-25 others of attacking her and her family at their residence in Shehdana area of Bareilly on Thursday evening.

The woman, Nida Khan, was divorced by Sheeran Raza through triple talaq in 2016, which she refused to acknowledge and appealed in court.

“The attack was to prevent me from pursuing the triple talaq case against my in-laws,” Nida said after meeting district magistrate Pinki Jowel on Friday. The DM has asked the local police to look into the matter.

According to the complaint, she was with her parents, Mussarat Yar Khan and Yasmin Khan and brother Moin Khan at around 5 pm on Thursday when around 20-25 people barged into their first floor residence and manhandled her family members.

“They manhandled my parents and pulled me by my hand in an attempt to drag me outside,” she said in the complaint. She also said that they were also carrying a bottle of acid which they threatened to use to disfigure her.

“The attackers raised slogans in the names of my husband and my father-in-law, and claimed to be their followers,” she alleged, and named Sheeran and his father Usman Raza Khan, a cleric who looks after the Ala Hazrat Dargah, the most revered shrine of the Barelvi sect of Sunni Islam, among the accused.

The police, however, claimed the allegations were false. “We have found that the matter was actually a fall out of a road rage, which was portrayed as a physical attack on Nida,” Rohit Singh Sachwan, superintendent of police (city) said. The officer claimed that the motive behind the allegation was to put pressure on her in-laws.

According to the police, Nida’s brother Moin had a minor altercation with a group of men near his residence. He was reportedly manhandled by the men. “This incident was falsely reported as a personal attack on Nida and her family members,” said the SP.

Nida, however, has termed the investigation “false and partial.”

“the police are acting under the pressure of my in-laws. How can they conclude that we were not hurt in the attack without ordering a medical examination,” she added.

Khan has also refuted the allegations, saying he had nothing to do with the attack.

“We have our differences but she is still like a daughter to me and I condemn any physical attack on her.”
