LUCKNOW/ALLAHABAD/VARANASI: The heat wave sweeping across Uttar Pradesh continued unabated on Monday, with temperatures hovering above 42 degrees Celsius in most places.

While Lucknow and Varanasi recorded 43.3 and 42.8 degrees Celsius respectively, Allahabad sizzled at 46.2 degrees. Banda was hottest in the state with 47 degrees Celsius.

The weatherman sees no respite for the people from the hot weather conditions soon. He has also issued a warning of thunderstorm, accompanied by gusty winds, at isolated places in the state. Meanwhile, doctors said adequate water intake was crucial in this season and advised people to avoid the intense sun rays between noon and 4 pm.

“Water intake in this heat is of great importance to keep the body safe. Also elderly people should avoid ‘outdoor walk’ before the sun goes down,” said Prof Vinod Jain of KGMU.

He said consuming fruits in breakfast and cucumber and onion as salad before meals will help a person stay healthy.

Doctors also said if lunch is kept light it will help a person remain active. “Breakfast should be sumptuous, with a variety of items, but lunch should be light unless you are directed by doctor under some diet plan,” said Dr Sandeep Kapoor, director Healthcity Trauma Centre and Superspecialty hospital.

An expert, meanwhile, said the rise in temperature was a sign of a healthy monsoon.

BN Mishra, weather expert and former head, department of geography, Allahabad University, said in such a scenario premonsoon showers could be expected in some days.

“The monsoon arrived in Andaman and Nicobar three days back. It is expected to reach Kerala between June 1 and 3. The trend of rise in temperature is indicating a healthy and timely monsoon this year,” he said.

In Varanasi, while boatmen complained of poor business, cold drink sellers were happy over their good sale because of the scorching heat. On Tuesday, temperature is likely to remain at 43 degree Celsius in the holy city and dust storm is likely on Thursday.
