WILL JOIN POLITICS, GOD WILLING: RAJINI
CLARIFIES THAT HE IS HOWEVER NOT JOINING ANY PARTY
Speculation on whether or not the Tamil film super star will enter politics once again was rife on Monday as Rajinikanth obliquely hinted at an entry when meeting his fans after a gap of some eight years.
He however maintained enough ambiguity and was noncommittal. He said, “if the Lord asked me to don the role of a politician, I would do justice to that.”
The actor said he has been apolitical so far and cautioned his fans to be wary of political parties that claimed that they had “his endorsement”.
“The god has asked me to act in movies and today I am an actor. And who knows about tomorrow. If the Lord gave me the role in politics, I will be true to it” Rajinikanth said addressing his fans.
“My life is in the hands of God,” said the God to many said.
At one stage, his apparent endorsement had supposedly helped the DMK in 1996. It was when AIADMK tied up with Congress under Narasimha Rao. Rajinikanth is known to have said then, “If Jayalalithaa is voted back to power, even god cannot save Tamil Nadu.”
The DMK-TMC (breakway Congress group) alliance swept the polls and some credit for the result was given to Rajinikanth’s political statement.
Most recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on the star at his house when he came campaigning for NDA as the prime ministerial candidate. Even at that time, Rajinikanth made it clear that there was nothing political in that meeting.
One of his fans said, “if Rajinikant Sir becomes a politician, he will be the best.” In the current day politics, Rajinikanth will be the cleanest person which Tamil Nadu needs desperately, said another.
His hint was also lapped up by Tamil Nadu BJP unit chief Tamilisai Soundarrajan who said a the BJP would welcome any leader who is clean and wants to clean up politics and corruption in public life she said.
