LUCKNOW: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) Lucknow came forward on Monday to defend the KGMU doctors accused of taking out a kidney from a patient in 2015.

Addressing a press conference, IMA Lucknow president Dr PK Gupta said, “Prithviraj, 23, came to KGMU trauma centre on February 19, 2015 with an injury. The injury was such that the patient’s intestine was repaired and an artificial passage was created to remove the toxin spread in the body. In such a case, taking out an organ is near impossible. Even if taken out, it will be of no use.”

Dr JD Rawat said, “A patient who is brought in emergency with low blood pressure cannot undergo an organ retrieval operation. Also as toxin had spread in his body due to perforation in the intestine, removing any organ for transplant was out of question. In such a condition, transplant is impossible.”

The doctors also said that in 2015 only PGI had the facility of transplant operations.

The IMA office bearers have sent a letter to the UP director general of police, demanding the FIR against KGMU doctors to be expunged.

They also cited a Supreme Court order where it is mentioned that FIRs should not be lodged in medical cases, and instead, a committee of experts should examine the case first. In this regard, Dr SNS Yadav said, “The matter can be examined by experts who know medical science.”

The patient was discharged on March 17.”

Doctors said that the survival rate for the surgery that was performed on Prithviraj was very poor.
