Medical courses: CS asked to probe order on non-UP students

The Allahabad high court on Monday directed the UP chief secretary to make an inquiry into the issue of medical students of other states not being permitted to appear for counselling in admission to post graduate medical courses in state universities.

A two-judge bench comprising justice Arun Tandon and justice Rekha Dixit has also directed that action be taken against the officers who passed the government order not permitting students from states other than UP to appear in counselling of post graduate medical courses in state universities. The petitioner said such a government order was in violation of guidelines issued by the Medical Council of India. The court directed the chief secretary to submit his report on the matter by May 23.

The court passed this order while hearing a petition filed by Dr Ram Diwakar and others. The petitioner has challenged the restrictions put by the state government in medical courses.

The petition also alleged that preference to students from Banaras Hindu University and Aligarh Muslim University was given in the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test.

The director general, medical health and training, had issued a circular on March 31, 2017 on the basis of a government order dated March 10, 2017 that medical students of other states be not permitted to go for counselling for admission in government medical colleges in UP.
