LUCKNOW: References to superstar Amitabh Bachchan and former minister Azam Khan’s stolen buffaloes provided some lighter moments in the state assembly that otherwise witnessed heated exchanges once or twice with the opposition targeting Yogi Adityanath government on the law and order situation in UP.

Leader of Opposition (LoP) Ram Govind Chaudhary read out a long list of recent incidents of crime to make his point about the ‘deteriorating’ law and order situation in the state during tenure of Yogi government. Congress Legislature Party leader Ajay Kumar ‘Lallu’ also referred to some incidents of crime.

Speaking on motion of thanks to governor’s address, Chaudhary said the Samajwadi Party (SP) would return to power with 385 seats in the next assembly polls if Yogi government continued to function in this manner.

Taking a dig at the ‘false’ promises the BJP had made to people, Chaudhary targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the ‘Gujarat model’ and creating a drama over ‘feeding’ cows. Yogi too had been doing so, he said. As Chaudhary made some gestures to convey the PM’s way of feeding cow (keeping the feed in his hand), minister for parliamentary affairs Suresh Khanna said Chaudhary would prove to be a better actor than Amitabh Bachchan.

When Chaudhary said Azam Khan was the first to oppose cow slaughter at a meeting of Akhilesh Yadav cabinet, another minister Swami Prasad Maurya referred to Khan’s stolen buffaloes and how Akhilesh government had deployed police to trace them. Chaudhary also targeted the BJP for politicising the Ram temple issue and claimed former PM Rajiv Gandhi had laid the foundation stone of Ram temple. “If the Babri Masjid had not been demolished, then Ram temple would have been built,” he said. Earlier, heated exchanges were witnessed when Chaudhary linked ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ slogans with the RSS and said that the organisation had stayed away from the freedom struggle. Yogi was not present in the house when Chaudhary began to speak. The CM, however, reached the house when former minister Azam Khan took strong exception to his absence.

Meanwhile, a united opposition tried to raise issue of police raids on the house of BSP MLA from Chillupar Vinay Shankar Tiwari in Gorakhpur recently.
