HYDERABAD: In a typical tragic love story, a 20-year-old Telangana woman committed suicide after her 23-year-old husband, who came to drop her at parents’ house, went missing for more than two weeks.

Tummala Swathi of Lingarajupalle village of Atmakur block in Yadadri Bhongir district, was found hanging at her parents’ house early on Tuesday. A day before, she allegedly attempted suicide by consuming toilet cleaner but was rescued.

Swathi was supposed to appear before the Hyderabad high court on Wednesday in connection with a habeas corpus petition filed by her husband Amboji Naresh’s parents, who complained that he had been missing since May 2, when he went to Bhongir town to drop Swathi.

Naresh, who belongs to lower caste, used to stay with his grandfather at Pallerla village of Yadadri Bhongir district, as his father Venkataiah along with his wife had been to Mumbai in 2001 in search of livelihood. He and Swathi from the neigbouring village studied together since childhood and fell in love as they were pursuing their graduation.

On March 16, Naresh eloped with Swathi to Mumbai, where he married her in a Bandra court on March 25 without the consent of his parents. However, following a suggestion from the court, they approached the local police, who called the parents of the couple and counselled them.

Since both Naresh and Swathi were majors, the parents could not say anything then. Swathi’s father Srinivasa Reddy, who had lodged a kidnap case with the Bhongir police against Naresh had to withdraw the complaint.
