The Lucknow police on Thursday formed a special investigation team (SIT) comprising a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) rank officer and four police station incharges to unearth the mystery behind the death of Karnataka cadre IAS officer Anurag Tiwari (36).

SSP Lucknow Deepak Kumar said the SIT had been asked to submit the investigation findings to him within 72 hours. He said the team will investigate the entire sequence of events and circumstances that led to the death of the 2007 batch IAS officer.

The SSP formed the SIT after Anil Tiwari, Karnataka’s resident commissioner in Delhi, on Thursday sought details from the Lucknow police about the mysterious death of Tiwari, who was found lying dead on roadside near the state guest house on Meera Bai Marg in Hazratganj on Wednesday. The commissioner has also sought the copy of post-mortem report of the deceased.

“Although the IAS officer’s family had not lodged any formal complaint in the matter, we have initiated the inquiry under the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) 174 that allows police to do the investigation in any matter without any formal complaint,” said the SSP.

He said the SIT will be led by DSP Avinish Mishra, circle officer of Hazratganj, supported by four police inspectors, including the inspector of Hazratganj police station, AK Shahi. He said three other members include Hasanganj inspector UV Singh, Ghazipur inspector GS Tripathi and Madiaon inspector Anjani Pandey.

The SSP said the DSP had been asked to collect all details related to the deceased IAS officer’s movement before his death. He said the mobile call details will be scanned and people who met him recently will be questioned. The video footage of a restaurant where he reportedly had dinner on Tuesday night will also be scanned.

He said the SIT will also seek opinion of forensic experts on the entire incident.
