The school bags for government schoolchildren may now have joint images of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UP CM Yogi Adityanath. Nearly 1.8 crore schoolchildren in Uttar Pradesh are in the process of getting new schoolbags for free.

Sources said computer generated design of the bag with pictures of the two leaders has been prepared and it will soon be presented before the CM for his approval.

“Yes, it has been discussed at the top level and a number of prototypes of the bag with the pictures was taken out. We need the CM’s consent before a final decision is taken,” an official said.

Call it some compulsion or large hardheartedness of the new chief minister, only recently the state government had decided not to dump the schoolbags with photograph of former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav.

“It will be very interesting to see what the CM now decides -- to distribute old bags with Yadav’s picture or replace it with the joint image of Modi and Yogi,” an official said.

The officials said there was nothing wrong in the move as in the past Akhilesh Yadav allowed his picture to be used in several government school schemes -like free bags, steel plates and glasses for mid day meal and also the free laptops, etc.

Politics over names of government schemes is already being played out in Uttar Pradesh.

Last month only, the Yogi Adityanath government had decided to remove the ‘Samajwadi’ prefix from all the projects initiated by the previous regime.

Adityanath had asked officials to submit a list of all the state government schemes having the “Samajwadi” tag before the cabinet. The government plans to replace the word with “mukhya mantri”, sources said.

Also, the students of government-run schools in Uttar Pradesh will soon get a smarter red and brown uniform which will replace the old khaki attire that was in use for the last five years.
