Bahujan Samaj Party leader Chaudhary Munawwar Hassan, his wife and four children were murdered by a business partner who plotted to usurp the politician’s properties, police said on Monday.

The suspect, Delhi property dealer Sahid Khan aka Bunty, confessed to have hired contract killers to murder his friend and his family, an officer said.

He, two contract killers and a friend were arrested.

Bunty told police that Hassan’s wife Sonia and teenage daughters Arzu and Arsha were shot dead in Meerut a month ago and buried in crop fields along a highway.

His two sons, Akib and Shakib, were allegedly strangled to death and buried in a house on a disputed property in Burari.

The bodies of the boys were exhumed on Monday night.

Hassan, who contested from the Badli assembly constituency in the city’s northwest in 2013, was found dead in a bathroom of his Burari home on Saturday. He was shot in the back.

Hassan,42, was arrested early this year for rape and released on interim bail on May 17.

When he returned home, he could not find Sonia and the children.

He visited Burari police station the next day and got a missing complaint registered.

On Saturday morning, police received a call from Bunty that the politician, who was a native of Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, was murdered.

“Bunty said he came to meet Hassan and found him dead. But he kept changing his statement,” deputy commissioner of police Jatin Narwal said.

Gaps in his narrative prompted police to put him through sustained questioning.

He confessed that he plotted the multiple murders through hired killers to grab disputed properties that Hassan had allegedly acquired, an officer said.

A police team was sent to Meerut to trace the bodies of Hassan’s wife and daughters.
