LUCKNOW : The state government has constituted a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the Saharanpur caste conflict, in which two persons died and over two dozen were injured. The government also claimed normalcy in Shabbirpur and neighbouring villages. Ten inspectors had been posted in the SIT, which would submit its report within a month.

Addressing a press conference, inspector general (IG), public grievance, Vijay Singh Meena said the district police had registered 40 cases since the outbreak of violence on May 5.
Ten inspectors had been posted in the SIT, which would submit its report within a month.
The state government had rushed a four-member team, including secretary, Home, Mani Prasad Mishra, ADG (Law and Order) Aditya Mishra, IG, STF, Amitabh Yash and DIG, Security, Vijay Bhusan to assist in maintaining law and order.
Tension gripped the area on May 5 after clashes between Dalits and Thakurs.
Over 40 houses of Dalit families were torched following the death of an upper case youth in the clashes, which began following a dispute over a procession by Thakurs to commemorate the birth anniversary of Rajput king Maharana Pratap.
Days after the May 5 killing, angry supporters of Dalit group Bheem Army torched a police post and several vehicles in Saharanpur.
And on May 23, a Dalit youth from Suankheri village in Sarsawa died of gunshot wounds while eight others sustained injuries when unidentified people attacked a group of Dalits returning from a rally of BSP chief Mayawati. Later, the state government imposed ban on the visit of leaders of political parties as also on internet.
