Obesity, hypertension may lead to coronary artery disease: Docs
LUCKNOW: Obesity, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, smoking, dyslipidemia, diabetes and hypertension pose risk of coronary artery disease (CAD), according to experts.
Addressing a seminar on ‘Wellness in present day lifestyle’, organised by the Lucknow Management Association (LMA) in collaboration with Rotary Club, Indian Institute of Technology-Roorkee Alumni Association and Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi, senior consultants from Apollo Hospital spoke on conditions ranging from acute conditions such as heart failure and breast cancer.
Experts in cardiology and oncology Dr Monica Kher and Dr Manish Singhal, spoke on prevention of heart diseases and cancer treatment. The doctors also reviewed current indications, results and complications of techniques currently used in the surgical treatment of these diseases.
Senior consultant, medical oncology, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, Dr Manish Singhal said, “Those with strong family history of cancer in a family – specifically of breast, ovary and large intestine – can be tested for germ/ genetic mutations and undergo preventive surgeries. These include removal of breast (mostly with reconstruction), ovaries and uterus, and large intestine.”
Consultant, cardiology, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, Dr Monica Kher said, “CAD is a major cause of mortality and morbidity throughout the world. It is caused by plaque build-up in the walls of coronary arteries. Obesity, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, smoking and hypertension are coronary risk factors.”
