Obesity, hypertensi­on may lead to coronary artery disease: Docs

LUCKNOW: Obesity, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, smoking, dyslipidem­ia, diabetes and hypertensi­on pose risk of coronary artery disease (CAD), according to experts.

Addressing a seminar on ‘Wellness in present day lifestyle’, organised by the Lucknow Management Associatio­n (LMA) in collaborat­ion with Rotary Club, Indian Institute of Technology-Roorkee Alumni Associatio­n and Indraprast­ha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi, senior consultant­s from Apollo Hospital spoke on conditions ranging from acute conditions such as heart failure and breast cancer.

Experts in cardiology and oncology Dr Monica Kher and Dr Manish Singhal, spoke on prevention of heart diseases and cancer treatment. The doctors also reviewed current indication­s, results and complicati­ons of techniques currently used in the surgical treatment of these diseases.

Senior consultant, medical oncology, Indraprast­ha Apollo Hospitals, Dr Manish Singhal said, “Those with strong family history of cancer in a family – specifical­ly of breast, ovary and large intestine – can be tested for germ/ genetic mutations and undergo preventive surgeries. These include removal of breast (mostly with reconstruc­tion), ovaries and uterus, and large intestine.”

Consultant, cardiology, Indraprast­ha Apollo Hospitals, Dr Monica Kher said, “CAD is a major cause of mortality and morbidity throughout the world. It is caused by plaque build-up in the walls of coronary arteries. Obesity, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, smoking and hypertensi­on are coronary risk factors.”
