Chandigarh’s Sumit bags North India Open snooker crown

LUCKNOW : Chandigarh’s Sumit Talwar proved his supremacy in style, defeating sparring partner Rajat Khaneja 4-3 to win the North India Open Snooker Tournament, at the Green Baize Academy here. After winning the first frame by 60-14, Sumit loost the second one by 24-070 with Rajat notchin up a break of 52 (1-all). Showing a great spirit of comeback, Sumit then had the third one by 75-37 before losing the fourth one by 6-75. The dingdong battled continued even after that and Rajat had the fifth frame also at 63-39, but thereafter, Sumit in the last two frames turned out to be a different man. He won the sixth one by 73-51 to draw the parity, and then smashed a break of 73 to claim the final frame by 80-0. Earlier in the semi-finals, Sumit defeated Akshay Kumar 4-2, whereas Rajat beat Vinayak Agarwal 4-2.

CHESS TEAM

Lucknow District Chess Sports Associatio­n on Monday announced its team for the Under-13 Boys And Girls State Chess Championsh­ip to be held at Agra from June 2 to 4.

The team members include, Medhansh Saxena, Harshit Amarnani, Dhairyesh Druv, Tanishq Gupta, Vasundhara, Himmika Amarnani, Prisha Garg, Harshita Srivastav, Maitreyi Gupta. A two-day conditioni­ng camp of the team begins on Tuesday here in Indira Nagar.

Chief sports officer of the UP Power Corporatio­n Sanjeev Kapoor has been unanimousl­y elected as senior vice-president of the All India Electricit­y Sports Control Board. Kapoor is former state table tennis player.
