LUCKNOW NEW DELHI: The gruelling heatwave in Uttar Pradesh continued on Monday to torment residents and also making it difficult for them to move outdoors.

Hot and sultry conditions prevailed in Lucknow and, as per the weatherman, there aren’t any chances of respite from the humid conditions. While a slight dip in temperatures has been predicted, increase in humid conditions has also been forecast.

State met director JP Gupta said, “Monsoon would not hit UP before June 18 as per the current conditions. However, mild showers can bring some relief for the people of the state by bringing down day temperatures slightly. There are no chances of respite from humidity in the coming few days.” Gupta said the present conditions are due to air cyclonic circulation over eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Lucknow recorded a maximum temperature of 42.5 degrees, which was 3 degrees above normal, and minimum of 30 degrees (3 degrees above normal). The relative humidity was 55 per cent.

On Sunday, the mercury touched 45.3 degree Celsius in Lucknow, making it the hottest day of the season.

The blistering heat continued in many parts of the country, too, with Bhatinda in Punjab recording a maximum of 48 degrees Celsius. There were no signs of any respite from heat in the national capital where the maximum temperature settled four notches above normal at 44.6 degrees Celsius. Humidity levels oscillated between 44 and 15 per cent.

Bihar, too, experienced hot and dry weather with the mercury setting at 46.1 degrees Celsius in Gaya.

However, heavy rain and thunderstorm were witnessed at Nashik in Maharashtra where three persons died after being struck by lightning on Sunday.

Light rain was recorded at some places in Rajasthan since Sunday even as the rising mercury at some places in the state threw normal life out of gear.

Rainfall occurred in parts of Lakshadweep, coastal Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.
