The bail application of 11 students, including two girls, who were sent to jail on Thursday for allegedly breaching the security of chief minister Yogi Adityanath, was rejected on Friday.

Of the 11, the Lucknow University identified eight as its bonafide students and suspended them while also issuing show cause notices to them.

The students were arrested on Wednesday evening for coming in front of the fleet of the chief minister who was on his way to attend a function in Lucknow University.

The fleet had to be halted for 2-3 minutes due to the incident which took place between Hanuman Setu and gate number 1 of Lucknow University.

The bail application was heard at the court of additional chief judicial magistrate (ACJM) Sunil Kumar. The court rejected the bail plea as the police booked them on serious criminal charges.

Legal experts said they would have to move to district and sessions court to seek relief.

Earlier, the court of chief judicial magistrate (CJM) Sandhya Srivastava had sent the students to 14-day judicial custody.

Indian Penal Code sections 147 (rioting), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant), 341 (wrongful restraint), 353 (using criminal force to deter public servant), 504 (insult), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 120 (B) (hatching criminal conspiracy) and 7 Criminal Law Amendment (CLA) Act has been slapped against the students.

LU vice chancellor SP Singh said all eight university students, including two girls, had been suspended and debarred from all student facilities. They have been identified as Apoorva Verma, Pooja Shukla, Satwant Singh, Nitin Raj, Anil Kumar Yadav, Ankit Kumar Singh, Rakesh Kumar and Madhurya Singh.

LEGAL EXPERTS SAID THEY WOULD HAVE TO MOVE TO DISTRICT AND SESSIONS COURT TO SEEK RELIEF.

Whether the other three are also bonafide students of the university is yet to be confirmed.

Singh said the university administration was also sending them show cause notices. He said the notices will be sent to them in jail as well as to their permanent address.

He said the process of their expulsion from the university will be initiated if the university was not satisfied with their replies.

The police claimed it initiated stern action as the chief minister enjoys Z-Plus security and the student activists allegedly entered into scuffle and manhandling of police personnel when they tried to stop them. Those involved in the protest mostly belonged to the Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha, the student wing of the Samajwadi Party and the All India Students’ Association (AISA).
