Audio of Aligarh mayor threatening cop goes viral

-

ALIGARH An audio, allegedly of Aligarh mayor Shakuntala Bharti rebuking and threatening a police inspector on phone, went viral on social media on Friday evening. The mayor pulled up the cop for issuing a challan to her peon Veer Pal.

The incident happened at around 3.30 pm on Friday in Madrak police station area, where Asna police post in-charge Rakesh Singh was conducting a checking drive. He challaned Veer Pal for Rs 500 for not wearing a helmet and for not carrying his bike papers. When Pal told him that he was the “ardali” (peon) of the mayor, Singh said he did not know her.

On coming to know about this, Bharti called up the inspector. She was heard asking him if he was new to the city. When the inspector said he had come from ‘Kannauj’, she asked him if Kannauj had a mayor or a chairman. The inspector said it had a chairman, to which Bharti said that the mayor was above the chairman. She is also heard accusing him of forcing commuters to pay bribes and said she would come to the police post to check his challan record book. When the cop insisted he hadn’t done anything wrong and had given Pal a receipt for the fine, she went on to say “Abhi aa rahi hoon tumhara hawai jahaaz (aeroplane) banaane” - implying a threat.

Meanwhile, Veer Pal claimed he was carrying his documents and the cop challaned him only because he did not pay him Rs 500.

Now, Aligarh SSP Rajesh Pandey has asked for a report. “I have asked for a complete report of the incident, including the grounds on which the inspector challaned Veer Pal,” he said. Speaking to HT, Bharti said, “Pal had his bike documents but was not wearing a helmet. He told the inspector that he would go home to get his helmet but the inspector asked him to pay Rs 500 instead. When sPal said he did not have the money, the inspector challaned him.
