Terror laws must be made stricter

- Brig (Retd) Arun Bajpai

Three jehadis drove their van on the pavement of London Bridge on June 4th, killing seven innocent people. After their van stalled, the three jehadis attacked various pubs in the vicinity with knives injuring 50 people, some of them seriously.

This carnage only stopped when all three were killed by the police. It has now been confirmed that the ring leader was a Pakistani origin person who had migrated to the UK. Another jehadi was a Moroccan. This incident happened just a week after a jehadi blew himself up in Manchester Town killing 20 innocent people and injuring many. ISIS has taken responsibility of these attacks.

Surely no country will now like these migrants to first come to them in search of better job opportunities and then start killing innocent people. Already, there are demands surfacing in Britain asking these migrants to go back to their country.

Same had happened in France after jehadi attacks there. After this jehadi attack in Britain, US President Donald Trump has again demanded that there should be immigration ban in the US for people coming from Muslim countries. It is common knowledge that unlike a jehadi who belongs to an organisation and acts on the ideology and orders of head of that organisation and hence can be kept under watch and even traced by the intelligence agencies, most of these jehadi attacks in western countries are ‘lone wolf attacks’. A lone jehadi could be a happily married chap minding his job and business and hence very difficult for intelligence agencies to indentify. One fine morning he picks up a weapon and a vehicle and goes out killing innocent persons. Worst is when he does not use a firearm, as the three jehadis did on London Bridge. This concept of ‘lone wolf jehad’ has been propagated by the ISIS which is letting down its own community. What is really surprising is that educated migrants in western countries are succumbing to this ISIS propaganda.

Worst affected in this kind of jehad are the democratic countries. In these countries people enjoy their fundamental rights and privacy. As a result it is very difficult to keep track on people with jehadi mindset. Intelligence agencies cannot predict a strike or forewarn a target area. So what is the answer? It lies in more awareness of the citizens and most important the members of the community reporting unusual behaviour of any community member. Democratic countries must also help each other by sharing as much information as possible. Terror laws in democratic countries must also be made very strict.
