Police arrested nine student leaders of the Samajwadi Party Chhatra Sabha, who were protesting outside Lucknow University vice-chancellor’s residence on Friday. The court sent them to jail.

The protesters were on a hunger strike, demanding the release of the 11 student leaders who waved black flags and stopped chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s fleet during his visit to Lucknow university (LU) on June 7. They also demanded that LU should revoke the students’ suspension.

“The protesters were arrested on Friday under the code of criminal procedure section 151 (for causing nuisance),” said inspector, Hassanganj police station, PK Jha.

“They went on hunger strike without giving prior information,” said LU proctor Vinod Singh. “Four out of nine were already expelled from the campus for indiscipline. Vivek Singh and Neeraj Shukla were expelled in November 2016 for passing vulgar remarks on a girl. Suraj Pratap Singh Sai and Karunesh Dwivedi were expelled for disturbing the peaceful academic atmosphere on the campus.”

Singh said vice-chancellor SP Singh had called the other protesters - Sarvesh Kumar Shukla and Satish Sharma - for a meeting, but they did not turn up.

Meanwhile, Trishul Dhari Singh, an SP Chhatra Sabha leader, said, “The BJP government is trying to trample upon our democratic rights. They are suppressing our voice against the rising atrocities on Dalits, minorities and women in UP.”

Earlier on June 10, protesters hit the streets under the banner of the All India Student Association, demanding the release of the jailed students. Members of SP Chhatra Sabha also staged a similar protest on June 13.
