Man beats woman in public, held

A day after the video of a man beating a woman in public went viral, police arrested the accused in Sangadi area of Pilibhit on Friday morning. The girl was sent for medical examination.

“We have arrested Abhishek Gangwar, 25, of Jahanbad for attacking a woman in public with an intention to kidnap her. Earlier, an FIR was registered against him,” said superintendent of police (SP), Pilibhit, Devranjan Verma.

According to police, the incident took place on Wednesday when the girl was outside a gym with her friend.

The CCTV footage showed that the accused approached the girl and after an argument, attacked her.

“We have also traced two other women who were present and recorded their statements,” said the SP.

Police have registered an FIR under section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 369(kidnapping for ransom) and 511(attempt to commit offence) of the IPC. The accused was sent to 14-day judicial custody.

Reportedly, the accused and the victim were members of the same gym.

The girl said Abhishek wanted a romantic relationship and was enraged because she refused.
