Jail inmate strikes gold in DTS course of IGNOU

Lodged in central Jail, Varanasi, 30-year-old Suresh Ram was given gold medal for topping diploma in tourism studies Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in 29th convocatio­n of the varsity on BHU premises.

30-year-old prisoner serving life term at the Varanasi central jail in a murder case was conferred gold medal for topping the diploma in tourism studies at the 29th convocatio­n of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) at BHU on Saturday.

Director of IGNOU’s regional centre, Varanasi, AK Tripathi said that among the candidates enrolled for the course at 3000 IGNOU study centres across the country, Suresh Ram scored the highest 72% marks. Tripathi said the jail administra­tion was informed about his success and asked to bring him to the convocatio­n. Vice chancellor of the BHU, GC Tripathi, gave away the gold medal and diploma to him. He enrolled for the one-year-diploma course last year.

Ram, a resident of Dohra Kala village in Ghazipur, obtained his BA degree from a college in the district. An elated Ram said he wanted to be a lawyer was planning to enrol for LLB course in 2007. But destiny stored something else for him. His life changed forever because of an incident over a land dispute in which a person was murdered.

He said a case was registered and against him and he was arrested.

After the trial, the court sentenced him to imprisonme­nt for life. Jailer Dheerendra Pratap Singh, IGNOU course coordinato­r at the prison, said that Suresh is a good cricketer who is also interested in studies.
