Crimes have taken place and will continue, says DGP
Uttar Pradesh director general of police (DGP) Sulkhan Singh said crimes happen in society and will continue. “If anyone thinks crimes can be stopped completely, (they must understand) it is almost impossible. However, the law and order situation has improved.”
In Aligarh on Saturday, the DGP said police should work at increasing public confidence. “Police behaviour needs to improve. We should preserve human dignity while dealing with law and order situations.”
He said police had the advantage of technology, such as, online lodging of FIRs, today. “However, many don’t know about this. We will launch drives to increase public awareness on (how to lodge) online FIRs.”
Speaking on the Jewar incident last month, in which four women were raped and a man was shot dead after their car was stopped on the highway, Singh said, “Investigations are on and police will nab the culprits soon.”
Returning after inspecting the site of the proposed police training centre, he said strengthening highway security was police priority.
Earlier, during a law and order review with senior police officials, the DGP said, “Highway security should be enhanced. Private vehicles must be hired if necessary.”
Senior superintendent of police (SSP), Rajesh Pandey, also concurred. He told HT, “Four extra police jeeps are in service on the highway.”
The review was attended by Ajay Anand, additional director general of police, commissioner SC Sharma, district magistrate Rishikesh Bhaskar, SSP, and police superintendents of Mathura and Hathras.
NOW, LODGE FIRS AT SSP OFFICES
Meanwhile, concerned with police apathy in registering FIRs, the state government has made provisions for people to lodge their cases at SSP offices.
Special counters will be opened for the purpose, and action will be taken against police personnel who refuse to register FIRs.
Principle secretary (home) Arvind Kumar has issued orders.
“Victims are often forced to make rounds of police stations for lodging FIRs. When they fail, they reach out to the government. Due to this apathy, they lose confidence in police, and the government’s image is also tarnished. Our Supreme Court has also said that FIRs should always be registered,” he said.
