Income Tax raids on irrigation official’s houses

Teams of IT department of Delhi, Ghaziabad and Meerut raided the houses of irrigation department’s chief engineeer Sudheer Kumar Sharma and contractor Ajay Kumar here on Friday morning. The raids continued till last reports came in on Saturday.

According to IT department sources, 60 officers of Delhi and Ghaziabad were part of the teams which conducted raids in five districts of western UP.

“The teams are still compiling reports of seized documents and other things”, said M K Jain, jr director of investigat­ion. He refused to divulge the details.

One of the teams reached the official residence of Sharma on Boundary Road on Friday morning . The six -member team with a woman officer had arrived from Ghaziabad for this raid. Sharma lives here alone while his family lives in Noida.

The team quizzed Sharma and the government staff posted at his residence. The private residence of the chief engineeer in Noida was also raided. Sharma is to retire from service on June 30 and the marriage of his daughter is scheduled on July 3.

Another team raided the residence and office of contractor of the irrigation department Ajay Kumar in Ganga Nagar locality. It is believed that the chief engineeer is charged with unjustifia­ble distributi­on of money to the contractor­s in the ₹10 crore project of the department in Muzaffarna­gar.
