KANPUR: The residents of Paraukhan village, in Kanpur Dehat, broke into celebration on Monday soon after the BJP-led NDA namedBihargovernorRamNath Kovind as its candidate for the president’s post.

Villagers lit ‘diyas’ (earthen lamps) filled with ‘ghee’, sang devotional songs and organised religious programmes at their homes. They also distributed sweets among the people. Overjoyed BJP activists danced on the streets after the announcement was made.

Kovind was born in this village and completed his primary education from the village school. He pursued LLB from DAV College of Law in Kanpur and shifted to Delhi for legal practice.

During his visit to the village last year after becoming the governor of Bihar, Kovind declared his parental house a ‘baratshala’ (marriage hall) for the use of villagers as there was no place to organise marriage functions.

Kovind’s nephew Anil Kumar, who resides in Jhinjhak in Kanpur Dehat, said his joy knew no bounds and he was happy that his village would now figure on the global map. “My uncle is very friendly. He meets everyone and helps the people in need,” he said.

A villager, Kamlesh Kumar, said Kovind was a very humble person. “Though he is a busy person as he holds a responsible position, he meets villagers with simplicity and listens to their grievances,” he said.

“When he visited the village after becoming governor of Bihar, he did not miss any occasion to meet us and look into our problems,” Kamlesh said.

“Kovind will definitely set a precedent after getting elected to the coveted post. He will prove to be the messiah of the weaker sections,” he added.
