A 35-year-old woman, who was allegedly gang-raped in a moving car by three men after being abducted from Haryana’s Gurgaon on Monday night, recorded her statement with Noida Police, officials said on Tuesday.

Initially, it was believed the woman was abducted from Sohna but Noida Police later said she was picked near Gurgaon’s MG Road Metro station and taken to Noida and then Greater Noida, in an incident which has put the spotlight back on the lack of safety for women in the national capital and areas surrounding it.

The woman said she was walking near her residence in Sohna when she was pulled into a car by the men and assaulted for nearly eight hours.

Gurgaon police commissioner Sandeep Khirwar, deputy commissioner of police (Crime) Sumit Kuhar, and DCP (East) Deepak Saharan were present at the Sector 29 police station as the woman recorded her statement in the presence of a woman lawyer as per the legal norms. Khirwar said that the matter was under investigation and he will brief the media later.

An official said they got the information about the incident at 3am and immediately took the woman, who was spotted crying in front of Yatharth Hospital under the jurisdiction of Kasna police station, to a hospital for medical examination.

A resident of Rajasthan’s Bharatpur who had come to Sohna for work, the woman said she was walking near her residence in Sohna when she was pulled into a car by the men and assaulted for nearly eight hours.

The woman came to Gurgaon 10 to 15 days ago and was living with her family in Sohna area.

She said the men took turns to rape her in the moving car and after driving through Delhi, they reached Greater Noida where they threw her out in a dark spot before escaping.

“The victim has claimed that she was picked up at around 8.30pm on Monday in Gurgaon. She was allegedly raped in the car while the accused were driving around,” Suniti, Noida superintendent of police (rural), said.

“Some beer bottles were also found from the spot which indicates that the accused persons were inebriated at the time,” a senior Greater Noida police officer told PTI.

Sources in the police department said there is some confusion regarding the case and that the matter needed to be probed further.

India brought in more stringent laws against sexual offenders after the fatal gang-rape of a student in Delhi inside a moving bus in December 2012, but they have failed to stem the tide of violence against women across the country.

On May 29, a woman was allegedly abducted and gangraped in Gurgaon’s Manesar area and her nine-month-old baby killed to smother her cries. She, too, was left on the roadside after about four hours of assault.

The incidents highlight poor patrolling by the police particularly at night in places such as Gurgaon and Gautambudh Nagar.
