Senior students at schools affiliated to UP Board will now get theory and practical lessons in yoga bandh (body locks), ‘anulom vilom pranayam’ and ‘mudras’ (hand gestures) to stay physically and mentally fit.

Widening the yoga syllabus for students of classes 9 to 12, UP Board has included a number of topics in the syllabus.

The final and approved syllabus, after being duly published in a gazette notification by the state government, is being sent to all schools for implementation from the new academic session beginning July.

In April, the Yogi Adityanath government had decided to make yoga a part of the curriculum for classes 5 to 12 covering over 1.25 crore students studying in over 25,000 schools.

These include 2,152 government schools, 4,535 government-aided secondary schools and 19,209 unaided institutions.

Before the revamp, yoga studies were limited to a few ‘asanas’ and basic information for the students of classes 9 to 12. Yoga was a part of ‘Moral studies, sports and physical education’ paper which has now been renamed as ‘Moral, yoga, sports and physical education studies’.

Though it continues to be mandatory for students of classes 9 to 12, the marks obtained in this paper will not be added to the overall result.

Earlier, the compulsory theory paper was of 50 marks and out of this, six marks were fixed for yoga for students of classes 9 and 10. For students of classes 11 and 12, yoga was of 5 marks.

The importance of yoga for these classes has been increased by making it worth 20 marks in theory.

The practical of 50 marks has 20 for yoga for senior classes.
