He is credited with imparting yog lessons to over 1000 foreigners in Vagyoga-- a fusion of hath yog and raj yog-- in the last four decades at his ashram.

In his mid eighties, yog guru Vagish Shastri focuses on awakening of ‘Kundalini Shakti’ (dormant energy) through Vagyoga technique which he claims to have developed after years of rigorous practice of raj yog.

Explaining the difference, he says that hath yog means physical exercises to control mind and body. On the other hand, raj yog means dharna (concentrate on a particular point), dhyan (meditation) and samadhi (contemplation), he adds. Many people from India and abroad come to his ashram for yog training every year.

His disciples are spreading light of yog in many countries, including Germany, Russia, Austria, China, Spain, the USA and the Netherlands. In 1964, first foreigner visited his ashram in Shivala area. He learned yog for about three months before going back to Germany. He started spreading light of yoga back home. Later, several Germans visited Banaras and learned yog practice for awakening of Kundalini and controlling the mind.

“Vagyoga is a technique to know oneself through yoga. I learned this art from Guruji. This yogic technique focuses on Kundalini meditation. It strikes a balance between mind, body and soul and purifies consciousness ,” Susanne, one of his disciples from Germany told HT .

“I am highly inspired by yog that has added to my concentration and filled me with positive ideas. I am thankful to Guruji for imparting me knowledge of yog and Sanskrit. I like Indian philosophy and the Srimad Bhagvad Gita is full of philosophical knowledge,” says Skorovodina, a Russian disciple of Shastri.
