ALLAHABAD: Come July, the boysonly government intermediate colleges (GIC) will open their gates for girl students too.

The government has taken the step to provide a fillip to girls’ education in the state. Orders in this regard have been issued to the officials concerned.

The decision will allow girls to get admissions in around 225 such institutions functioning in different districts.

The 361 Government Girls’ Inter Colleges (GGICs) will, however, continue to remain only for girls.

As the number of seats in GGICs is limited, the initiative will help more girl students to take admissions in GICs closer to their homes and get quality education.

The order has come after the proposal to make GICs co-educational institutions, submitted by director (secondary education), UP Amarnath Verma, was approved by the state government.

Joint secretary (education) Shatrunjay Kumar Singh issued the government order on June 14 giving a go ahead to the proposal.

Co-education is already being provided in 1,505 government high schools in the state.

Government-aided secondary schools located in urban areas of the state also provide co-education up to class 10.

Additional director (secondary education), UP, Ramesh Kumar said the order had been received and it was being forwarded to all assistant directors and district inspectors of schools (DIoS) for further action.
