Dipa Karmakar may skip World Gymnastics due to leg injury
Indian gymnastics icon Dipa Karmakar might not take part in the World Championship due to an injury in her right leg. However, she has set sights on the Commonwealth Games to be held in Gold Coast, Australia next year.
Dipa accompanied by three other gymnasts -- Ashmita Paul, Priyanka Dasgupta and Abhishek Sinha – had gone to Delhi recently for a training session at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium. “Everything depends on Dipa’s recovery from the injury. Rehab is going on and it will continue for another twoand-half months. If she believes she is in a position to participate, she will take part, else, she will have has to skip it. Obviously, her main target is to score good in the Commonwealth Games next year,” Dipa’s coach Bisweswar Nandi said. However, he plans to request the Sports Authority of India (SAI) to allow Dipa to accompany the India team to Canada for the Championship even if she doesn’t take part. “We are planning to request SAI to allow Dipa to accompany the team, even if she is not able to compete. At least, she would be inspired,” said Nandi. Dipa underwent an anterior cruciate ligament ( ACL) surgery in Mumbai after she got hurt during practice.
