Three UP girls make it to Indian hockey Core Group

a great moment for Uttar Pradesh hockey as three of its girl players on Thursday made it to the Core Group of the Indian women’s hockey, camp of which is in progress at Bengaluru.

The first in the list is Mumtaz Khan, daughter of a vegetable seller of Lucknow. Others are Sunita Yadav of Lucknow Girls Hockey Hostel and Yogita Kumari of Vir Bahadur Singh Sports College in Gorakhpur.

“It’s a big achievemen­t to Uttar Pradesh hockey,” Hostel coach Neelam Siddiqui told HT on Thursday. “All three are very talented and have already proved their might at the national and internatio­nal levels.” Mumtaz was part of the Indian squad at the Under-18 Asia Cup early this year. Sunita, who has been in the hostel for the last four years, has played for sub-junior and junior nationals.

FINE SHOW

UP girls won the gold medal in the team event of the 12th Junior National Soft Tennis Championsh­ip, defeating Madhya Pradesh by 2-1 at the Punjab University in Chandigarh on Thursday. In the boys section, UP had to satisfy with silver medal after losing to Madhya Pradesh 1-2.

WEEKLY BRIDGE

The duo of AK Sinha and SQ Wajahat scored 63.89 percent points to win the match point pairs event at the Weekly Bridge Tournament, at the Lucknow Club here. They were followed by SK Garg-VK Rattan (55.56%). In all seven pairs played seven rounds of three boards each.

TWENTY20 CRICKET

Three wickets each by Kushagra and Irfan helped Divine Cricket Club enter semi-finals of the Girja Shanker Srivastava Memorial Twenty20 Cricket Tournament, defeating Standard Cricket Club by six wickets, at the Multy Activity Centre here on Thursday. In other match of the day, DYA defeated Cricket Promotion Group by five wickets.
