:To minimise road accidents, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) has decided to sensitise rickshaw pullers, taxi and bus drivers through workshops and practical sessions in its traffic park in Krishna Nagar.

With cab aggregators like Uber and Ola operating here, the number taxis has increased manifold. But, in the absence of any regulator there is no one to sensitise drivers about the rules.

Similarly, e-rickshaws can be seen at every nook and corner of the city, but no effort has been made to sensitise them about the safety of people and traffic rules.

Therefore, the LMC plans to organise a series of workshops for rickshaw pullers, e-rickshaw, taxi, auto and bus drivers from next month, said additional municipal commissioner PK Srivastava.

“This traffic park has all the facilities to train drivers. For years, the park remained unused. But with this new initiative, it will be used for the purpose for which it was built. We will try to educate as many drivers as possible,” he added.

He said traffic experts and traffic police officials would be talking to the drivers, telling them about the importance of following traffic rules.

Just because of lack of sensitisation on traffic rules and reckless driving, around 550 accidents have taken place in the state capital in the first six months of the year. This has resulted in over 100 deaths.

Reports say that around 60% of accidents could be avoided, had traffic rules been followed or the drivers were more alert.

Speeding vehicles also often hit rickshaw pullers because they deviate into their lanes due to lack of awareness. Sometimes accidents are also caused due to wrong parking.

Not only that, lack of parking etiquette may result in a brawl or a traffic jam.

Municipal commissioner Udairaj Singh said the LMC will keep on playing its role in improvement of city traffic. These kinds of awareness workshops and practical training sessions would help sensitise commercial drivers about road safety, he added.
