GORAKHPUR : The body of the slain CRPF sub-inspector Sahib Shukla, who was killed in a militant attack at Pantha Chowk area in Srinagar on Saturday, arrived at Gorakhpur airport by a special plane at 7.30pm on Sunday.

Senior CRPF officials, commissioner Anil Kumar, district magistrate Rajeev Rautela, DIG Neelabja Chowdhary paid floral tributes to the martyr in the presence of his son Devasheesh Shukla and other family members. Hailing Shukla’s ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty locals raised slogans ‘Shaheed Sahib Shukla amar rahein.’

As there is no power supply in Shukla’s village, his body was kept at the post mortem house in district hospital from where it will be taken for last rites on Monday morning.

Earlier, a pall of gloom descended over Shukla’s ancestral village Kanail Majhgawan, Gorakhpur as news of his martyrdom spread. Locals, relatives and district administration officials started gathering at his residence in his village. Incidentally, Shukla had arrived here last on June 12 to attend his elder son Devasheesh’s marriage. The martyr’s wife Shobha Shukla was inconsolable while sons Samrat, Devasheesh and nephew Upendra went in a state of shock after hearing the news. It was Devasheesh who first learnt about his father’s death after a senior CRPF official called from Srinagar to inform about the tragic incident.

“He looked very happy when he visited the village on June 12 to attend Devasheesh’s marriage. He met everyone in the village and promised to visit again but who knew he would never return,” said Upendra while holding back tears.

Resentment brewed against Pakistan as villagers shouted slogans against the neighbouring country for supporting terrorism and sheltering militants.

Meanwhile, Devasheesh said he would not cremate his father’s body till chief minister Yogi Adityanath visited them.

The chief minister spoke to the martyr’s kin on phone and promised to meet them during his two-day visit to Gorakhpur on July 9. The district administration arranged the call after they came to know about Devasheesh’s resolve.

After assurance from the CM, Devasheesh agreed to cremate his father’s body on Monday morning.
