The key to avoid health issues is to maintain proper weight through regular exercise and good eating habits, doctors said.

Addressing a seminar on wellness at LMA conference hall here, the doctors discussed acute conditions such as arthritis and liver ailments.

The seminar was organised by the Lucknow Management Association, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, IIT Roorkee Alumnae Association and AMU Old Boys Association.

Senior consultants from Apollo spoke about symptoms and prevention of various lifestyle diseases.

Throwing light on ailments caused due to lifestyle, senior consultant, orthopaedics and joint replacement, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, Dr Yatinder Kharbanda said: “Arthritis is a form of joint disease in which there is damage to the surface of joint thereby causing pain and stiffness. Women are more prone to arthritis.”

“This can be treated with muscle strengthening, weight control, exercise in warm water-hydrotherapy and hot fomentation with physiotherapy. A balanced diet, exercise regime and avoiding stress minimises pain and prevents development of arthritis. However, a knee joint replacement surgery is suggested to those suffering from end-stage arthritis,” he said.

The wellness seminar aimed to educate the masses that by choosing a healthy diet, being physically active, maintaining a reasonable body weight, avoiding stress and following expert treatment, one can prevent arthritis.

Senior consultant of gastroenterology at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals Dr Sudeep Khanna said one of the most important factors in weight gain was sedentary lifestyle.

“People are much less active today than they used to be earlier. With televisions, computers and video games filling their spare time, lives have become busier. There is less time to cook healthy meals. More people are eating at restaurants, grabbing takeout food, or buying quick foods at the grocery store or food market,” said Dr Khanna.

“This contains lot more fat and calories than meals prepared from fresh foods at home. Try to make healthy choices every day. The best way to avoid these health problems is to maintain a healthy weight. The key to healthy weight is exercise and good food habits,” he said.
