The family of Junaid Khan, who was allegedly lynched on a local train while travelling from Ghaziabad to Mathura on June 22, demanded death penalty for the accused on Sunday.

“I appeal to the government to announce death penalty for the accused and arrest all those involved in this case. Such incidents are happening everyday in every part of the nation and we are living in fear,” Junaid’s father Jalaluddin told ANI.

Junaid’s brother Shakir, who was also attacked in the incident, said the family appreciated the work done by the police to arrest the main accused.

“I appreciate and want to thank the police for their efforts in arresting the main accused and others involved in the case. The nation is in an atmosphere of fear due to lynching of any caste or religion,” Shakir said.

The Haryana Railway Police arrested the main accused, whose identity was kept secret by the police, in the incident from Maharashtra’s Dhule district on Saturday.

The Faridabad district and sessions court sent him to twoday police remand on Sunday. The next hearing in the case will be conducted on July 11.

A senior police official on Sunday said the prime accused was working as a security guard in Delhi and has confessed to stabbing the Muslim youth.

He said the accused had boarded the train from Shivaji bridge station in Delhi. “His con- sent will be sought for Test Identification Parade before court,” the officer said.

The knife used in the crime has not been recovered so far, he said, adding the accused told the police that the weapon was in his possession.

“It is an open investigation and only after thorough interrogation of the accused will the complete sequence of events in the case come to the fore,” the cop said, replying to a question about the sequence of events that led to Junaid’s killing.

“Time limit for this investigation cannot be fixed. Whatever facts we could share have been shared. But in the interest of investigation, revealing more facts at this stage will not be appropriate. We will share the facts as and when they become clear,” he added.

The officer said it was difficult for them to crack the case as thousands of people travel from Delhi to Mathura daily on the local train. “Different types of methodologies were adopted by the police and the arrest is a culmination of all those continuous efforts. I won’t reveal which which technique led to the arrest but a lot of aspects were touched upon by the police..,” he said.
