BBAU’s session begins without new students
The new academic session at the Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) began on Friday without any new students. Reason: The university is yet to conduct entrance test.
The institution had postponed entrance test between June 3 and 5 after the anti-corruption wing of the CBI arrested university professor Vipin Saxena and his aide for accepting bribe on June 2. However, the exam was postponed till further notice.
The fate of thousands of candidates, who took the entrance test held before June 2, also hangs in balance. Why? It was Prof Vipin Saxena whom the university entrusted responsibility of conducting entrance test. After his arrest, the sanctity of the test has come under scanner.
Besides, in view of the uncertainty over the Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy (CSSEIP), the admission to the proposed MA (Development Studies) course is kept in abeyance. Therefore, the entrance test of the course scheduled on June 1 was also postponed till further notice.
Engineering students were without teachers as the university cancelled contracts of parttime teachers who helped the CBI arrest the professor and his aide for accepting bribe. The university will now appoint guest faculty. Many university officials are clueless as to how it would give admission to new comers. “All depends on vicechancellor RC Sobti. We have no idea about the university’s line of action,” an official said.
Soon after CBI sleuths arrested Professor Vipin Saxena of BBAU in the bribery case, the varsity changed the name of its engineering college, leaving students and faculty members perplexed.
BBAU renamed its engineering institute from ‘University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET)’ to ‘Centre of Engineering and Technology’. Besides, it appointed faculty member Prof Kaman Singh to “act as the coordinator” of the centre.
Nearly 700 students are pursuing B Tech from the engineering college, and this sudden change in the institute’s name has left them worried.
