Plantation drive with public support begins in Sangam City today
With an aim to increase green cover, a citybased NGO plans to rope in every household to plant two saplings each during a drive set to begin on July 11 on the occasion of World Population Day.
The NGO, Global Greens, aims to enhance the green cover through public support without involvement of official machinery.
Talking to Hindustan Times president of the NGO, Manoj Srivastava, said over 2 lakh household existed in 80 wards of Nagar Nigam in the city limit and if every family plant two saplings every year during rainy season, the city could gradually recover its lost green cover which got damaged through unplanned constructions and other development works.
“The initiative named ‘Hariyali Mahotsav’ will witness intellectuals, professionals, businessmen and academics besides the common man contribute in enhancing the green cover of the city. The drive will continue till 15 October,” he said.
“Launching the drive on World Population Day was aimed at conveying the message that rise in population without increase in green cover would spell doom for the human race in coming days. If a resident is contributing in population boom, they should also come forward in nurturing the environment,” he said.
The drive would commence from Madho Kunj Park in Katra with the help of local corporator Sonika Agarwal and social activist Anand Agarwal with other corporators pitching in.
The drive would also be launched in other KAVAL towns, including Varanasi, Lucknow and Kanpur, he added.
