GUWAHATI: A 30-year-old man, who allegedly raped a minor girl, was lynched by an angry mob in Shillong on Sunday.

The victim, Yakub Khan Nongkynrih, allegedly raped the 11-year-old daughter of his landlord several times and also took pictures and made videos of the acts on his phone. The man was staying alone as a tenant.

“On Sunday, the house owner’s son is said to have seen the clips, following which the victim was allegedly beaten up by family members of the girl,” said Davis NR Marak, superintendant of police, East Khasi Hills district.

When police reached the scene at Nongkseh village in upper Shillong at around 6pm, a large crowd gathered and got involved in a scuffle with the police who were trying to rescue the injured man.

“Two of our team members also sustained minor injuries before we were able to rescue the heavily injured man and take him to hospital. But he succumbed to his injuries on the way,” Marak said.

According to the police, the victim sustained multiple injuries, including those on his head.

Preliminary investigation suggests he may have died due to perforation of his lungs by broken ribs.

“We have arrested the house owner and his son and are conducting investigations. A case of murder has also been lodged,” the SP said.

Police are yet to find the background of the tenant and the landlord.
