The opposition in the Vidhan Parishad on Wednesday unanimously demanded a CBI probe into the killing of five Brahmins over a land dispute in a Rae Bareli village last month.

Terming the crime as heinous and ‘unprecedented’ in the history of Rae Bareli, the Samajwadi Party (SP), the BSP, the Congress and the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) all raised the demand.

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) staged a walkout to register its protest against the incident.

The opposition said the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe was all the more important since two ministers in the Yogi Adityanath government had publicly aired contradictory views on the incident.

Such divergent views might influence the investigation by the local police, said the opposition leaders.

Vidhan Parishad chairman Ramesh Yadav referred the matter to the state government for necessary action.

Earlier, the SP members staged a walkout from the house as it was not satisfied with a supplementary answer by leader of house and deputy chief minister Dinesh Sharma during the question hour. The SP’s Naresh Uttam had asked the government to reveal the total wheat production this year, the production cost and if government had any plans to raise the minimum support price of wheat.

The SP MLAs also staged a walk out, demanding action against the killers of a grain trader and his son in Sitapur on June 6.
