LUCKNOW: Satish Pathak and his cousin Manish Kumar Chaubey were attending their ailing brother on the first floor of the Trauma Centre when fire broke out on the second floor of the medical facility on Saturday night.

All hell broke loose when doctors asked patients to vacate the ward.

Sanjay and Manish, who were attending their kin Ritesh Chaubey, 24, (all from Varanasi) maintained their composure in this adversity.

Next to Ritesh was lying a serious patient, who had only a female attendant. Without wasting anytime, the Satish and Manish put the patient on a stretcher and ferried him to the ground floor, while Ritesh was in the ward waiting to be shifted.

The brothers rushed back to the first floor without wasting time and rescued their kin, Ritesh, only to return to help other patients left stranded in the ward.

Instead of leaving the hospital after rescuing Ritesh, the brother duo decided to stay back and help in the rescue operation. They rushed to the third floor, skipping the second floor where the fire had broke out and which was full of smoke. Here, the hospital staff and security guards were carrying out the rescue operations.

Keeping their cool, the brothers shifted five more patients from the third floor to the ground floor with bare minimum resources available in the ward.

Ritesh, suffering from a urological problem and requiring immediate surgery, is now admitted to the emergency ward of the Civil Hospital.

“The ward was full of smoke. Hapless patients and their attendants panicked. Everyone wanted to reach the ground floor. However, it was not possible for patients to just leave the bed and take the stairs for the ground floor,” said Satish .

“We kept our cool and told others also to not panic. This helped us in not only rescuing our patient but also extending help to others,” said Manish . It was most difficult to shift three patients from the third floor to the ground floor along with oxygen cylinders, said the brothers.

They also appreciated the role of doctors and ward boys present in the ward.

“We are also thankful to doctors and the paramedical staff present there for helping patients. They extended all possible help and ensured that all patients reached to safety on the ground floor,” said Satish.

Looking for early cure of their ailing kin, the brother duo will try to admit their cousin to the SGPGI on Monday.
